Negotiations on unemployment aid pose a challenge.
Talks resumed Tuesday behind closed doors over the next tranche of coronavirus aid. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows are all holding firm so far on their stances of restarting expired jobless benefits.
Senator Schumer said, “We are really getting an understanding of each side’s position. And we’re making some progress on certain issues moving closer together.”
Senator John Cornyn of Texas said, “I can’t see how we can go home and tell people we failed, so I think that’s going to be a lot of pressure on everybody to come up with something. It really is a matter of will. It’s not a matter of substance at this point. This is just a painful period between people finally deciding OK, we want a deal, and then what that deal will ultimately look like.”
